iPhone 15 USB-C Port possiblity

iPhone 15 Might Embrace USB-C

New Images Suggest iPhone 15 Might Embrace USB-C, but Apple’s Approach Raises Questions

Fresh images that surfaced on Twitter/X, courtesy of leaker Majin Bu, appear to provide further evidence that the upcoming iPhone 15 could feature a USB-C port. However, a puzzling component on the port’s circuit board has sparked some concerns.

These images, reportedly showcasing the charging board for the iPhone 15 Plus, align with the recurring rumors that Apple is finally bidding farewell to the Lightning port after a decade in favor of USB-C. This move echoes Apple’s recent transition with its iPads. The timing is apt since the European Union is slated to enforce a law mandating the use of a standardized charging port for electronic devices starting next year.

Adding a layer of complexity to this shift is an enigmatic chip labeled as 3LD3, conspicuously present on the charging board. As per Majin Bu, this chip is an Apple-designed creation, which naturally raises curiosity about its purpose. While Bu speculates that it could be related to “transmission encryption” for safeguarding data during port-based transfers, the presence of an Apple-specific chip in this context has sparked concerns.

Potential Apple-imposed limitations loom Although USB-C is a widely used interface, speculations have been circulating, along with certain apprehensions, that Apple might strive to retain control over compatibility through its Made for iPhone (MFi) program.

Sources suggest that Apple could impose performance restrictions on USB-C cables and accessories that lack official iPhone 15 compatibility. The premise here is that while any USB-C accessory could function with the iPhone, only those endorsed by Apple-licensed companies would have access to the full range of data transfer and charging speeds. This strategy could potentially clash with the EU’s legislation on common chargers. However, EU lawmakers are in the dark about Apple’s specific intentions, leaving room for speculation.

At this juncture, nothing is confirmed, and even the rumors lack substantial support. Yet, considering Apple’s tendency to cling to its proprietary Lightning port to prolong its proprietary technology’s utilization, it’s plausible to consider that Apple might not seamlessly transition to USB-C with the iPhone 15.

The exact specifics of the iPhone 15’s USB-C ports might not receive official confirmation during the anticipated Apple September event, where the new phones are likely to be unveiled. Nevertheless, it’s reasonable to expect that Apple will highlight the USB-C port on the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max models. The event could also shed light on other noteworthy upgrades, such as the Action button on the Pro models and the adoption of the A17 Bionic chipset.
